Brunei Delegation Brings Sweet Opportunity
September 10, 2007 - 4:08pm — sitisudadi.omar
The Mildura region’s export of primary produce to Asian markets is set to grow after Mildura Rural City Council and the Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board’s efforts in Brunei. Council and the board have each recently signed Memoranda of Understanding with the Bruneian Government, committing all parties to work together in developing product to be sold under the Brunei Halal Food brand. Over the last 12 months, Mildura has already exported a range of produce to the Brunei market including dried fruit, honey, citrus and table grapes. The objective now is to continue to work with Bruneian government officials and local businesses to ensure Mildura businesses can complete and meet the accreditation process requirements for the Brunei Halal Food brand. Mildura Rural City Council Mayor John Arnold said there was widespread interest in a number of local products. “We are pleased to have been able to support the local businesses that did attend and to represent the others that wanted to make expressions of interest. “The Mildura delegation fielded a lot of interest in local products at the Brunei International Halal Food Expo, with particular interest in almonds,” Councillor Arnold said. “Significant enquiries were also taken for non alcoholic sparkling fruit drinks, citrus, olive oil, dried fruit and honey.” Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board Chief Executive Officer Andrew Millen said some exporters in the Mildura region already had Australian or related Halal accreditation. “This puts these businesses in our region in a good position to take advantage of future opportunities in this market,” Mr Millen said. “All of our displayed products were well received. We’re developing some very good contacts and hopefully the opportunities will be there for Mildura businesses to continue discussions for more product to go in,” Mr Millen said. Businesses seeking further information on the accreditation process should contact the SMEDB. Sunraysia Mallee Economic Development Board. Mildura Rural City Council. Media Release.
